Île de Sein: an inspiring example of seawater desalination

We took advantage of the visit to our premises by a delegation from American Samoa, Japan, the United States and New Caledonia to organise a meeting around the desalination installation on the Île de Sein.

💧It was an opportunity to discuss the issue of water in very concrete terms between two island territories that are very far apart, but face similar challenges: no natural freshwater resource, isolation, continuity of production, energy management and security of supply.

🫗Since 2003, the Île de Sein has been producing its drinking water using a desalination unit. The island is not connected to the mainland electricity grid and has no natural freshwater resource, making this installation, which has been in operation for more than 20 years, particularly inspiring.

This visit made it possible to present a concrete solution, already in operation, and to open up dialogue with representatives who came to draw inspiration from this experience for other island territories.

At SLCE watermakers, these issues are at the heart of our work: designing and manufacturing reverse osmosis solutions in France to produce fresh water from seawater, for maritime environments as well as isolated sites.
